Podcast: Hospital diversity leaders discuss opportunity for hospital-led race conversations and changes.
On this AHA podcast, Juana Slade, director of diversity and language services at AnMed Health, and Anton Gunn, hospital chief diversity officer and executive director of community health innovation at MUSC Health, shared their reactions to the senseless killing of another unarmed black person, as well as advice for hospital leaders to bring hope to staff, colleagues and communities during these difficult times.
Slade, who serves on the board of directors of AHA's Institute for Diversity and Health Equity, and Gunn emphasized the value of hospitals and health systems as anchors in the community and that they have the opportunity to provide a safe space for hard conversations about race that can result in positive changes. Further, they discussed how health care leaders must consider what more can be done to prioritize and invest in building a community that doesn't tolerate racism, and how hospitals can be part of a solution.
