ASHHRA Region 5

Carol J. Bank, Regional Consultant
November 2008

What a busy year this has been for all of us!  I don’t know where the time has gone!  Somehow I totally missed our 3rd Quarter newsletter, but think I’m back on track now.

Wrap-up on Austin Conference

It’s hard to believe it’s only been three weeks since we were in Texas at the 44th Annual Conference. It was a very successful conference, with almost 700 participants. Barbara Glanz was an amazing and energetic keynote speaker, and she took the time to participate in our conference for the rest of the day, including the MetLife social event at Stubb’s Bar-B-Que.

Region 5 had 82 participants registered. We always have great participation, and with next year’s conference in Chicago on Nov. 1–3, I know there’ll be a great turnout!

The Regional Consultants are sad to lose our leader, Lisa Schott, who has been the Board contact for us for the past two years.  Lisa has accepted a new position and has chosen to step down from her Board role. A farewell party was held for her on Saturday, before the conference was really rolling.

I am always so proud of all of the award winners. It’s wonderful to see your hard work recognized, acknowledged, and appreciated. Winners this year from Region 5 were:

Congratulations again to all of you!

In addition to the award winners, congratulations goes out to Amy Bean, HR director, Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac, Ind., who was this year’s recipient of the MetLife scholarship and who attended the annual conference in Austin. MetLife has committed to continuing to offer these awards, so next year’s winner could be YOU if your organization does not pay for your conference registration. More information will be available later, probably in the summer.

In the next couple of weeks, ASHHRA will have downloadable photos on the ASHHRA Web site. You will receive an e-mail telling you how to access the photos.

Next year’s conference will be at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago. You can already register online at ashhra.org.  If you register by Dec. 31, you can save up to $75. 2009 is the 40th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, and the keynote speaker will be former astronaut Buzz Aldrin!

ASHHRA Metrics Survey and Compensation Survey

Remember that you can submit your data any time for the metrics survey.  Begin planning for your year-end data collection now!  And the Compensation Report is available now.  Even if you participated in the report, you must submit an order form, which is available on the website.

Chapter President Information

I’m getting back on track with our conference calls. I tried a few times in the summer to set them up, but you were all so busy that I could only get two or three people to commit to a time.

By the time you get this newsletter, you will have been contacted for the next call, which I’m planning to schedule for Monday, Nov. 24 at 11:00 a.m. CST. Subsequent calls will be bi-monthly, on the third Thursday of the month at 2:00 p.m. CST. In 2009, that will be:

January 15                                            July 16

March 19                                               September 17

May 21                                                 November 19

And according to my records, current chapter presidents are:

Central Illinois – Julie Mann, Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital, Dixon, IL

Southern Illinois – Melodie Wilkie, Washington County Hospital, Nashville, IL

Wisconsin – Randy Schade, Aspirus, Wausau, WI

Michigan – Rick Van Laan, Borgess Health, Kalamazoo, MI

      Michigan – Ken Antzak

Indiana – Dianne Potter, Parkview Health, Fort Wayne, IN

Ohio – Mary Beth Knake, Flower Hospital, Sylvania, OH

Please let me know when you elect your officers and who the presidents-elect are.  Also, please share these dates with them, so they’re prepared when they become president.  I will add them to our conference calls as soon as you let me know their contact information.

Upcoming Conferences

Ohio will be having their fall conference next week at the Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark. They decided to wait until after the election so they could get the latest report on what the legislative future looks like for HR and healthcare. They’re also having a panel discussion on wellness program and a presenter from O.C. Tanner who will discuss “Employee Engagement, Satisfaction and Retention.”  I am very excited that I will be joining them for their conference.

Wisconsin is planning their annual meeting and conference at The Abbey in Lake Geneva April 22 – 24, 2009. No details yet on speakers or events.

Please let me know the dates of your conferences. I plan to visit Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois next year.

Happiest Holidays to everyone!

APRIL 2008        Volume 2, Number 2

Hello, Region 5!  Finally, finally spring is here!  My daffodils and forsythia are blooming, and all of your chapters are, too.  Everyone’s been sharing plans of spring conferences with me.  Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan have already met, with Central Illinois and Wisconsin coming in the next few weeks.

Leadership Conference
On April 24 and 25 your chapter leaders traveled to Chicago for two days of workshops with the ASHHRA Board of Directors and staff.  ASHHRA President Jeanene Martin told us about the strategic direction for 2008 – 2010, while Executive Director Cathy Sewell discussed our 2008 priorities.  They include strengthening our Web resources, implementing the ASHHRA Leader Institute, promoting the ASHHRA Foundation, introducing the ASHHRA Mentoring Program, and enhancing and expanding the use of the metrics tool.  (More about some of these in this newsletter.)

Julie Mann and Crystal Elliott, President and President-Elect of Central Illinois Healthcare Human Resources Association.

Molly Seals, Immediate Past President, encouraged us to step up and volunteer for leadership roles in ASHHRA. Amy Schultz, current board member, invited us to become mentors for new-to-the-profession members.  We heard an advocacy update, shared successes from our chapters, and participated in an interactive exercise about decision-making.

Leaders from AHA and Diversified Investment Advisors also shared important information, and we had both formal and informal opportunities for networking and sharing news of our chapters. It was a wonderful learning event, and we all felt fortunate and thankful to have had the opportunity to participate.

ASHHRA Awards
Now is the time for you to be completing your submissions for ASHHRA awards, due on June 20. Remember that you need to forward your nominations for Outstanding Chapter Officer to me for my signature before they’re sent in. I also want to encourage each of you to go to the Web site at
www.ashhra.org and read about the awards and see if there’s someone you’d like to nominate.  All of us are developing things all the time that would qualify for the Communications Award; we deserve to be recognized for it!

Congratulations, Indiana!
The Indiana Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration is celebrating its 40th anniversary on June 5 and 6 with a golf tournament and conference in Indianapolis. Congratulations can be sent to President Dianne Potter at
dianne.potter@parkview.com.

Please Come to Austin
Bob Walters, board member from Melbourne, FL, gave participants at the Leadership Conference a reprise of his musical invitation from last fall’s national conference to “Please Come to Austin” (sung to the tune of Dave Loggin’s “Please Come to Boston”).  The conference will be held in Austin, Texas on October 11-14, 2008.  We were privileged to get a peek at the conference agenda, and it’s pretty exciting.  There are some great pre-conference sessions, excellent keynotes, a whole lot of learning sessions, and the introduction of the ASHHRA Leader Institute with a new leader track in addition to the other learning tracks based on the HR Leader competencies.  Gary Pastore, chair of the Annual Conference Committee, told us that the early-bird conference rate is extended until May 31, so you have a bit more time to plan, but be sure to get those reservations sent in!

Scholarships
MetLife has again donated to the ASHHRA Foundation to enable one individual from each region to attend the annual conference.  The award is for $1,000 and will cover the registration fee and a portion of the hotel/travel expenses.  Applications and additional information are available on the website.  Please click on “Foundation.”

Region 5 Conference –  Final Report
Last, but by no means least, we had a wonderful time in Milwaukee at the Region 5 Conference. One hundred people gathered to hear Bob Riney, Mark Sasscer, Jim Frain, Yvon Martel, Kevin Sheridan, and Doug Jontz, and to attend Body Worlds at the Milwaukee Public Museum. Evaluations were excellent, and it looks like we might do this again in 2010!  We even made a bit of a profit, half of which will be shared with your chapters while the rest is in a fund for the next conference.

Cathy Sewell and Stephanie Drake, Executive Director and Associate Executive Director of ASHHRA

Mark Sasscer, Keynote Speaker

Yvon Martel of Halogen, and Jim Frain, Board Member

Again, thanks to the wonderful planning committee of Sue Edminster, Angie Hupf, Julie Mann, Tom McCauley, Jim Graham, Bruce Tisdale, Mary Beth Knake, and Maureen Van Dusen, and to the ASHHRA Board of Directors and staff for their unfailing support!

Region 5 News

February 2008
Volume 2, Number 1

Happy New Year, Region 5 members! This is my first newsletter since last fall, and I want to be sure to thank all of you for your support in re-electing me as your regional consultant. I hope to get out to more chapters this year and am looking forward to meeting many of you. Thanks for your e-mails and interest in what’s going on with ASHHRA!  It’s going to be another busy year for Region 5 and for ASHHRA.

Region 5 Conference
First and foremost, I have to talk about the upcoming Region 5 Conference. Last year when I did my first newsletter back in August, actually presenting a conference seemed like a pretty remote possibility, but now it’s just a month away (as I’m writing this).

As planned, Mark Sasscer was available to present his HR Leader Forum, and Region 5 ASHHRA members Bob Riney, Jim Frain, and Doug Jontz will be speaking, as well. We will be at the lovely Hilton Milwaukee City Center on March 13 and 14, and we hope to see many of you there.

I have a super committee consisting of Sue Edminster, Angie Hupf, Tom McCawley, Julie Mann, Maureen Van Duser, Mary Beth Knake, Bruce Tisdale, and Jim Graham, and as always, we are so grateful to our wonderful vendors and sponsors – we couldn’t do this without them!

If you need a registration packet, please call Brianna Ramirez at 608-745-5623 or e-mail her at bramirez@dshealthcare.com. Your registration form needs to be in to Brianna Ramirez before March 1. The deadline for discounted hotel rooms is February 21 – we hope to have them extend it, but that may not be possible.  If you wait, you’ll probably be paying full price for your hotel room.

Regional Consultants Conference Calls

The nine regional consultants have scheduled conference calls every other month to keep us up to date on what’s happening with ASHHRA. I will share that information with all of you, and I encuorage you to give me your feedback to carry back to ASHHRA. We recently had our first phone call, and I’m so excited about the plans for this year.

We learned that our education efforts this year will more than ever be focused on the HR Leader Model: HR Delivery, Healthcare Business Knowledge, Community Citizenship, People Strategies, and Personal Leadership. Our annual Chapter Leadership Conference in April and the HR Boot Camp at the national conference will be structured to strengthen these competencies.

Other Upcoming Events
The annual Chapter Leadership Conference is scheduled for April 24 – 25 at the Knickerbocker Hotel in Chicago. The length of the conference has been extended a bit, in response to your request for more time to network with your associates.

And our annual conference will be held in Austin, Texas, October 12 – 14. The Annual Conference Committee met in Austin for a site visit and to decide on the conference faculty. Be sure to register while the early bird registration is still available. Go to http://www.ashhra.org/ashhra/conference/conference2008/registration.html.

MetLife Scholarships
Metropolitan Life Insurance Company will again be sponsoring a scholarship for participation in the annual conference. This will be the second year that one person from each of our nine regions will attend the conference due to MetLife’s generosity.  Watch your e-mails for more details about the requirements and to hear the stories of last year’s scholarship winners. I hope we have many applicants from Region 5!

Member Recognition
Forms for this year’s award have been posted at
www.ashhra.org. Please check the Web site and see what you could apply for and/or consider who you should nominate. The forms are due back in to ASHHRA by June 20.

Other Information
Please don’t forget to submit your metrics information for our metrics survey. If you have questions, you can check the Web site or you can also e-mail me.

I’d love to include your calendars of events in future newsletters. Please send me details of your upcoming meetings or conferences that you’d like shared with the entire region.

I am frequently contacted about open positions and I always tell the recruiters that they should post their openings on the ASHHRA Career Center. If you have any HR needs in your organization  or if you’re looking to make a change, please check there first!

My next newsletter will be out in early May, after the Chapter Leadership Conference. Watch for pictures from the two conferences, as well as any chapters that invite me to come and visit.  I’m looking forward to seeing you!

Region 5 News
October 2007
Volume 1, Number 2

Hello again, Region 5 ASHHRA members!  Don’t you just love fall, especially in the upper Midwest?  As I was driving to work this morning, I really noticed all the reds in the trees.  To many of us, the fall means annual meetings, and then there’s the national conference, speaking of which….

Annual Conference

I can’t believe it came and went so quickly, but what a wonderful experience!  We had a record number of attendees again this year, with more than 680 in attendance.  The general sessions were the best ever, and the learning sessions were excellent, too.  The Board of Directors and the Conference Committee have worked diligently to ensure that each speaker provided “take-homes” in the form of policies, handouts, and other information to help you quickly implement what you’ve learned.  The exhibit hall and exhibitors were terrific, and the Centre for Excellence, in its second year, has grown into a perfect place to network.

Picture from left: Carol Bank, Randy Schade, Tom McCrawley, Julie Mann, and Doug Jontz.

Our region was well represented at the conference, with 162 registered attendees from Region 5.  Chapter leaders from Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana were present, as well as Doug Jontz, Region 5 Advocacy Committee member.

Region 5 had some outstanding chapters and individuals who received recognition in Anaheim.  Barbara Palmer, immediate past president, received the Outstanding Leadership and Service Award, a well-deserved acknowledgement of her years of service with ASHHRA.  Other award recipients are as follows:

Outstanding Chapter Achievement Award

Sue Edminister (pictured with Carol above), Affinity Health System, Menasha, Wis.
Jack Moss, Illinois Valley Community Hospital, Peru, Ill.

Maureen Van Duser, Akron General Medical Center, Akron, Ohio

Outstanding Chapter Officer Award

Canise McComb (pictured above), Graham Hospital, Canton, Ill.
Debra Palmer, Adena Health System, Chillicothe, Ohio

Randy Schade (pictured below), Aspirus-Wausau Hospital, Wausau, Wis.

Chapter Management Award

Ohio Society of Healthcare Human Resources Administrators - Three Stars

Wisconsin Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administrators - Four Stars

Best Practices

“Optimize Organizational Priorities with Integrated Human Capital Strategies,” Janice Bultema (pictured above), University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Madison, Wis.

Also, I want to share with you that Liz Appleton from Four County Counseling Center in Macy, Ind., was the winner of the MetLife scholarship in Region 5.

Congratulations to all of our winners!
Also refer to the ASHHRA Awards page for an entire list of names and photos of all ASHHRA Awards Program winners.

And Speaking of the MetLife scholarship….
MetLife made the first donation to the new ASHHRA Foundation, which represents the opportunity to support and fund education, research, and development of healthcare HR leaders.  More information about the Foundation will be sent out to you early next month.  Please consider the many ways you and your organization can support the Foundation, as well as benefit from the resources.

Region 5 Conference?  I think we’re on!
Plans continue to move ahead for a Region 5 Conference.  Thanks to the many of you who responded to the survey inquiring about interest.  Based on your responses, we are planning a one and one-half day event on Thursday and Friday, March 13 and 14, 2008 in Milwaukee, Wis.  This is a “save the date” notice.  We are working on the details of the locations and programming and will keep you advised.  Mark your calendars now!

Chapter Visits
I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to visit two chapters this year.  Wisconsin’s WSHHRA invited me to their annual meeting in Lake Geneva in the spring attheir September board meeting at Stevens Point.

And the
Illinois CISHHRA invited me to share ASHHRA news at their conference in Springfield in late September.

Check the Web Site
Two new items have recently been added to the ASHHRA site – the Healthcare HR Career Center and the Healthcare HR Buyers Guide.  Both online services are available free to all healthcare HR professionals.

Vote Early, Vote Often
Just a reminder that the elections for the 2008 board slate are open.  An electronic ballot was sent to everyone this week via e-mail.  You have until November 15 to submit your ballot; do it now before it gets lost in your inbox.

Other Information
I’d love to include your calendar of events in future newsletters.  Please send me details of upcoming meetings or conferences you’d like to share with the entire region.
