LEADING WITH PASSION AND PURPOSE

Hello Region 3 Members! I hope everyone is having a good summer filled with lots of fun and some vacation time!

It has been a very busy and rewarding summer for me as your Region 3 Consultant. July offered me an opportunity to attend the Regional Consultants’ meeting in Chicago. The meeting was very productive.  We judged the Annual Awards, which were presented by many of you. I was truly proud of the number of nominations from our Region.

September will be a busy month for the North Carolina and West Virginia Chapters as they both have fall conferences scheduled. I have included highlights in this edition.

Please be sure to submit your ballot for the 2009 ASHHRA Board of Directors candidates. We are fortunate to have Barry Lindeman, chapter president from Kentucky, on the slate from Region 3. Please check out Barry’s bio in this edition.

We are highlighting two more chapter leaders from Region 3: Penny Brown, West Virginia, and Evan Combs, Maryland.

Be sure to checkout The Joint Commission Alert included in this edition. Our system is expecting a visit anytime. We are always looking for tips to help us be ever ready for their unannounced visits!

Congratulations to Karen Moorefield of Region 3 for winning the ASHHRA Foundation Conference Scholarship sponsored by MetLife Resources. Karen is a member of the NCHHRA Executive Committee as District II director.

There are many exciting things planned for our Region 3 in 2009. The North Carolina and Virginia Chapters are planning a joint conference in Williamsburg, Va., in March, a lovely vacation spot not too far from any part of our region. Bob Borbet, NC president elect, and Chuck Walton, Virginia president, are busy planning an informative and fun filled conference.

Hope all of you will join us in Austin, Texas, for the annual conference in October 2008. The regional consultants will be presenting the second annual Health Care HR Basics Boot Camp on Saturday, Oct. 11. The Boot Camp is five interactive sessions based on the ASHHRA HR Leader Model. We have included these competencies in this edition as a refresher for everyone.

Gary Pastore, chair of ASHHRA 2008 Annual Conference Committee, and Jeanene Martin, ASHHRA 2008 president, have worked very hard this year to plan a fabulous conference full of professional learning opportunities and fun.

See you in Austin in October!

2 More ASHHRA Region 3 Chapter Leaders

Evan Combs – MBA, SPHR

Director of Human Resources

Upper Chesapeake Health

Evan is a busy father of three currently serving as president of the Maryland Healthcare Human Resources Association.  He has been affiliated with the Maryland chapter since 1989 when he began his career in healthcare HR with the University of Maryland Medical System as a Compensation Analyst. After seven years at UMMS and another seven with the Johns Hopkins Health System he accepted an HR Manager position with Upper Chesapeake Health, a non-profit, two-hospital system in his hometown in Harford County Maryland.

Evan has served the MHHRA as co-chair of the Compensation Committee, as well as treasurer, vice president, and now president. He clearly believes his affiliation with the Maryland Chapter has provided him with not only terrific career opportunities but also friendships that will last a lifetime.

He earned his BS Degree from Towson University in 1988 and his MBA from the University of Baltimore in 2001. He currently serves as the director of HR at Upper Chesapeake Health with responsibility for employment, compensation, employee relations and HRIS.

Report from Maryland Chapter

Successful Spring Conference

The Maryland Chapter held a successful spring conference on May 6 of this year with over 140 paid attendees. Their one-day conference was held at the Maritime Institute, which is centrally located near the BWI airport and convenient to the interstate.

Two-keynote presenters were highlighted this year. First, Richard Bennett, M.D. and COO from Johns Hopkins Bayview discussed “Diversity in Health Care” and the initiatives underway that have been key to their success. Secondly, the closing speaker was Dr. Stephen Byrum of the Spiritual Leadership Institute who discussed “Stress in the Workplace,” how it can be measured, and what you can do to decrease the level of stress.

The conference also included presentations by the Advisory Board on Workforce Planning and an HR Legal Update from two of the attorneys at Whiteford, Taylor and Preston LLC. The lunch prepared by the Maritime Institute was delicious and there was plenty of time allowed for networking.

At the end of the day, they gave away three educational scholarships to HR professionals pursuing higher education valued at $600 each, raffled off five Visa gift cards and one paid registration to the ASHHRA Conference in Austin.  Overall the day received very good reviews. One primary reason for the conference success is the way membership is handled. MHHRA uses an “organizational membership” approach whereas all employees of a member organization’s HR Department are considered members of MHHRA and any of them may attend the conference. For more information please contact Evan Combs at 443-643-3408 or Jim Miller at 410-550-0954.

Mercer plans to post the web-cast in mid-October.
