ASHHRA MetLife Scholarship - Region 1 Recipient Report
by Ann Angell

April 1, 2010

Greetings from Region 1!

Planning for our 2011 Region 1 Conference is well ahead of schedule thanks to the enthusiasm of an outstanding planning committee.  The Rhode Island Chapter is taking the lead, organizing an event staged in historic Newport, Rhode Island.  The theme, Crossing the Bridge to HR Excellence, promises to deliver strong educational components with a first class scenic backdrop.  Members from other State Chapters are welcome and encouraged to attend!  Mark your calendars for June 12 - 14, 2011.

In addition to conference planning, the Rhode Island Chapter continues to thrive under the leadership of Lisa Pratt.  The new ASHHRA guidelines are being met through professional development programs including Technology in the Workplace, Compensation & Benefits, and Succession Planning, among other things.  CVent, a web based registration system, is now being used with great success for program communication and membership surveys.  Other states are encouraged to check out CVent!  The Rhode Island Chapter is committed to community outreach, and this year they have chosen to target their efforts on Crossroads RI, whose mission is “to assist the homeless and disconnected on their journey toward a better quality of life.”

In Connecticut, Dave Watson reports that CHHRA has sponsored a number of free educational events for its members since last September.  A Membership Educational Event titled “Our Iceberg is Melting: Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions” was presented by Linda Rappaport, Managing Partner, Gazelle Strategic Partners. They also hosted a well attended Employee Relations Open Forum, and  Dr. Reza Yavari of Beyond Care presented “Taking Care of the Caregiver/Yourself – A Health and Wellness Program about Therapeutic Lifestyle Change.”  The annual CHA compensation survey distribution event had over 60 practitioners in attendance in February, and the Benefits Roundtable Forum was also popular.  CHHRA uses Survey Monkey for program feedback to capture ideas for future programming.

Vermont has taken on a “green” initiative for their Chapter meetings and is now paperless.  The Chapter is currently in the process of creating a Charitable Donation Program to support causes within the state, which will become an annual opportunity to give back to their communities.  In addition, Vermont’s 2010 student scholarship program (VSCA) is underway.  This program awards scholarships to students pursuing careers in healthcare or human resources management.  Upcoming educational programs, which rotate around Vermont, include Succession Planning & Coaching/Mentoring, Healthy Hospital Survey Results, Increasing Your Web Presence, and the Employee Non-Discrimination Act.  In the near future, Vermont and New Hampshire hope to host a joint meeting.  The upcoming educational program for New Hampshire will address Affirmative Action.

Beginning in July, 2009, MSHHRA (Maine) kicked off the 2010 fiscal year with a strategic planning session held in Maine’s capitol, Augusta.  The executive committee and committee chairs participated, and nine robust educational programs were scheduled, ranging from Legal Updates to Crucial Conversations to joint meetings with the Maine Nursing Executive Group (OMNE).  Most educational sessions have had standing room only. The presentation by the MSHHRA/OMNE group was a culmination of over two years of collaborative efforts by MSHHRA, OMNE and the Maine State Nurse licensing board.  A toolkit was the result of this collaborative effort, which was sanctioned by the Board of Nursing.  The toolkit was designed to assist and guide both clinical and Human Resource managers when dealing with the impaired nurse population.

Massachusetts, the geographical center of our Region, has 82 ASHHRA members.  Unfortunately, the state Chapter is currently inactive.  Through invitations to educational programs from other Region 1 states, we hope to re-engage our Massachusetts colleagues and generate some interest in re-forming their once-thriving Chapter.

We appreciate the diligence of Mike Paruta, our Region 1 Advocacy Representative. Mike keeps us abreast of legislative activity, particularly in the areas of union organizing and healthcare reform.  Information has been coming fast and furious.

Many thanks to all our ASHHRA members and state Chapter leaders, whose volunteer efforts support HR, healthcare and the community at large!

Message from Judy West, Region I Consultant

Hi Everyone:
It has been a pleasure this past year working with the different chapter presidents and with ASHHRA to look at ways to serve each of the chapters. I am impressed with the commitment—so many individuals give their time and talent in each of their states to grow ASHHRA membership at the local and national levels. Over the next year I plan on visiting many of the state chapters, and I look forward to hearing about the great things you are doing in your state, as well as ways that ASHHRA can support you.

Have a great 2009!
Judy

February 2008

Congratulations to Judith West, VP HR Maine Medical Center, on her election to the role of Regional Consultant.  Judith will be an outstanding advocate for our region. I also want to thank Dan Arsenau and Tim Clifford for being willing to give of their time to serve our region if chosen. Both of them have consistently volunteered their time to their own chapters to ensure that our profession and the membership of their chapters are being well served through ASHHRA and the various educational programs being delivered to their memberships. I look forward to working with Judy as we transition to her my duties and responsibilities as your regional consultant.

It has been my great pleasure to have served you as the regional consultant and to have had the opportunity to interact with so many fine people within the region. The strength of our chapters is what has always enabled Region One to consistently achieve many awards and recognitions from ASHHRA. The dedication of those volunteering their time, their strong commitment to our profession and to our professional association is very gratifying and truly made serving as the regional consultant a rewarding experience. I am glad to be able to have opportunities to continue to serve on the local, regional, and national level, and will be staying involved with ASHHRA and with Region One colleagues as this year I have been elected to be president-elect of the Rhode Island Chapter with an eye toward serving as the president of AHHRARI in 2009. May your year be filled with joy and success in all your endeavors. Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to be of service.
